Library Databases

As well as its own collection, the Dalton McCaughey Library (DML) has access to several useful databases through the American Theological Library Association (ATLA). When you use the Combined Search function, some of these resources will be included in your results, but you can also search these databases directly by navigating to them from the Resources tab accessed through the drop down menu at the top left of the website home page.

This guide is just a brief overview of the kinds of resources you can find in each of these databases.

DML Catalogue

The DML Catalogue search will return results from all the resources the DML owns directly. To access journals the DML subscribes to, search for the name of the journal then click through to the journal’s own website to gain access.

ATLA Religion Databases

This link contains several ATLA databases. When you begin your search, you can choose to search in any of the following six databases:

  • ATLA Religion with ATLA Serials: An index of journal articles, book reviews, and essay collections. The best place to go to get short, up-to-date scholarship on your research topic
  • EBook Collection: Searchable full text eBooks. Good for finding more in-depth engagements with a topic
  • ATLA Historical Monographs Collection, Series 1 & 2: These collections of historical texts cover an enormous historical range. Series 1 covers texts up until 1893, with many texts on biblical languages in the 19th century. Series 2 covers 1894-1923 and contains many texts on non-Christian religions and American cultural shifts.
  • New Testament Abstracts: This is an index of academic work on the New Testament, allowing you to expand your research beyond what these databases have access to the full text for and giving you a broad view of the field you are working in.
  • Old Testament Abstracts: This is another similar index, this time for work on Old Testament texts.

ATLA Cooperative Digital Resource Initiative (CDRI)

This database contains scanned collections of all kinds of artifacts bearing on religious topics from libraries across the world. This is the place to go to look for images of ancient coins, medieval maps, woodcuts and lithographs, sermons, photographs and any other miscellaneous images and texts that fall outside the usual forms that text databases and library catalogues contain.

ATLA Digital Library

Similar to the CDRI, ATLA Digital Library gives access to scanned documents and images from libraries around the world. If your work covers particular historical periods this link and ATLA Images may be invaluable, giving you access to thousands of historical documents of all kinds.

JSTOR Access

The DML has access to many journals and books through JSTOR. JSTOR provides high quality PDFs of texts going back over a century, with an enormous range of free and open access materials as well as those the DML subsribes to. when you use the search function, it will automatically filter out texts you do not have access to, so anything that shows up in your search you will be able to read in full.

Jesuit Library Online

This database contains journals, histories, and other records covering all aspects of Jesuit Studies. Through his, many primary Jesuit documents can be accessed online.

University of Divinity Library Hub

For University of Divinty students, the Library Hub gives access to resources beyond those of the DML, including the collections of the other University of Divinity libraries. There are also historic newspapers, special collections, and subject guides among other resources, all of which will give you more places to develop your research.
